Abstract

In order to achieve a safe motorized society in the coming years, it is essential to work toward preventing the very occurrence of traffic accidents. It is particularly important to face the reality that the majority of traffic accidents are caused by drivers’ misperception of risk factors. In this regard, it is necessary to focus greater efforts on active safety measures that assist drivers’ cognitive ability and call their attention to potential risks. Against this backdrop, we have been pursuing active safety measures that are specifically intended to prevent typical right-turn accidents occurring at intersections in Japan. In this work, we first identified the factors causing such right-turn accidents and analyzed driver behavior in right turns. The results revealed that calling the driver’s attention to potentially risky situations would be an effective way to avoid right-turn crashes. As a concrete embodiment of that approach this paper proposes a support system for preventing right-turn accidents using road-to-vehicle communication. The feasibility of implementing the proposed system is discussed based on the results of driving tests conducted on public roads using prototype facilities.
