Abstract

This paper provides a brief review of small-scale thermal desalination in Southern Africa Development Countries (SADC) and South Africa (SA) in particular. Based on the literature studied, multistage solar stills with stacked stages have not been studied in this region. Therefore, the current work looks at other types of solar stills that have been studied in this region. These studied stills are then compared to those studied in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), China and India, to determine their suitability in SA. The study further looks at the extent to which SA has implemented solar thermal technologies and their future prospects. This paper discovered that there is abundant global solar insolation with positive prospects for thermal desalination in SA. However, there is not enough studies carried out on different types of small-scale solar stills in SADC and SA.
