Abstract

ABSTRACT In this present study, the emissions characteristics of four stroke, single-cylinder, water-cooled, diesel-engine fuelled with different blends of pongamia biodiesel i.e. PBD100, PPBD100Mgo1000 (100 ppm nano-additive dispersed in PBD100) and PPBD100Mgo200 (200 ppm nano-additive dispersed in PBD100) at 1800rpm for compression ratio 17.5:1 were investigated. The transesterification process was used for biodiesel production with the presence of the alkaline catalyst (KOH) and methanol. The optimum biodiesel yield was found to be 88%. Results revelled that the NO x , HC, CO and smoke emissions were reduced with the increase in the concentration of MgO. It was also observed that PPBD100Mgo200 showed effective results when compared to diesel fuel.
