A decade-plus-long European economic recession has fostered and hardened racist and xenophobic attitudes toward immigrants. As immigrants often occupy the very bottom of the economic ladder, their labor contribution is rarely acknowledged, and their very unpopularity is routinely exploited by politicians seeking re-election.
