Abstract

INTRODUCTION Coping with competitive stress and anxiety is a part and parcel of high achievement sport. Numerous programs for teaching mental skills are currently available in the literature and actively used by applied sport psychologists. However, much less is known about experiences of consultants working with competitive and elite athletes and teams. For instance, what are the typical mental difficulties that a consultant can encounter in her or his work? Why do these difficulties exist? What are the best options for helping the athletes to deal effectively with mental difficulties? In this paper, Allen Fox shares his experiences of working with American tennis players and attempts to answer some of these questions from the consultant’s perspective. The main emphasis in his reflections is on how to repair deficiencies in athletes’ coping skills and how to correct relapses to inadequate emotional habits.
