Abstract

Chapter 2 reveals the fascinating backgrounds of Morgenthau, Waltz and Mearsheimer. Additionally, it contextualizes the inquiry by summarizing the extensive writings of these scholars and identifying the role of fear within them. With regard to Morgenthau, his extraordinary journey from Europe to the USA is covered along with his work on international law and relations, American politics and the Jewish question. Waltz’s entire career and writings on international relations, foreign policy, nuclear weapons and globalization are revealed here as well. Finally, Mearsheimer’s time in the military along with his appropriation of fear in his works on deterrence, European peace, international relations, American foreign policy and the rise of China are explored in detail in this chapter.
