Abstract

For many years Israelis have experienced periods of national stress and calm. An Israeli Fear Survey Schedule (I-FSS) of 97 items, reflecting situations and objects likely to arouse fear was developed. Subjects were 656 students (438 females and 218 males). The I-FSS was administered during three different periods: two periods of stress—the War of Attrition (1970), immediately after the Yom Kippur War (1973), and one period of temporary calm (1973, just before the Yom Kippur War). The fear scores were significantly lower in the calm period than in the two stress periods. This was true both for males and females.
