Abstract

In ordrer to achieve high linear density recording, a thin main-pole film for a single-pole head is indispensable. The authers investigated the soft magnetic properties and the domain structures of thin Fe-Si single-layered films and Fe-Si/SiO2 multi-layered films. Good soft magnetic properties were obtained in both films. Contrary to this good magnetic properties, the single-layered main-pole film of 100nm thick showed unstable readback output and poor resolution. This poor head performance was closely related to the domain structure. On theother hand, the adoption of the multi-layered film controlled the domain structure and improved the high density response.
