Abstract
When a bridge is constructed on soft ground, the ground may deform largely due to the weight of embankment. In order to prevent large ground deformation and lateral flow, air foamed lightweight geomaterial has been applied as backfill material behind bridge abutment. Bridge constructed on soft ground in Japan backfilled with the lightweight material is investigated in this research. 2D and 3D FE analysis had been carried out to evaluate lateral backfill pressure and deformation of abutment-backfill system. Results from FE analysis revealed that placing of elastic plate in backfill is effective method for reduction of lateral backfill pressure.
