Abstract

A list of 107 calanoid copepod species collected at 114 sampling stations visited during two oceanographic cruises carried out in the Gulf of Mexico is presented. The ecological and biogeographic affinities, bathymetric distribution and main previous reports in the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent zones are indicated for each species. Some general considerations are made in regard to the copepod fauna in the surveyed area.

Highlights

  • La zona norte del Golfo de México ha recibido bastante atención por parte de los planctólogos, sobre todo en las partes correspondientes a las regiones oceánica, nerítica y costera frente a las costas de Texas, Louisiana y Florida en los Estados Unidos

  • The other 40 sampling sites were visited during the BIPIX-8603 cruise, carried out in August 1986 on board the vessel BIP-IX of the Instituto Nacional de la Pesca (INP) (Fig. 2)

  • The calanoid copepods were sorted and processed using the methods described by Omori and Fleminger (1976)

Summary

Introduction

La zona norte del Golfo de México ha recibido bastante atención por parte de los planctólogos, sobre todo en las partes correspondientes a las regiones oceánica, nerítica y costera frente a las costas de Texas, Louisiana y Florida en los Estados Unidos. The northern Gulf of Mexico has been thoroughly studied by planktologists, especially regarding the oceanic, neritic and coastal areas off the Texas, Louisiana and Florida coasts in the United States. The oceanic, neritic and coastal areas of the territorial sea and the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico in the southern portion of the Gulf are very less studied (Suárez, 1991). This is true when we take into account the actual knowledge on the distribution, composition and abundance of the planktonic copepods. Its ecologic relwance as main components of the oceanic and neritic zooplankton dynamics has been widely recognized (Bjömberg, 1981)
