Abstract
This survey paper deals with the design of fault tolerant real time systems. After an analysis of the reliability requirements of the different types of real time applications, the effects and the causes of system failures are discussed. Different fault tolerance strategies are presented in order to achieve a level of dependability, which is optimal for the particular application environment.
