Abstract
This paper is intended to set the line for a discussion of how to increase fault tolerance of complex industrial processes via model-based fault detection and isolation (FDI). The state of the art of model-based FDI using analytical and knowledge-based models is reviewed along with a brief outline of both the basic Ideas of different approaches and some perspectives for future research and development in this field.
