Abstract

Fatty liver disease was observed in some of the private fish ponds around Bhubaneswar. Affected specimens, mostly, Catla catla were having the disease in varying degrees. There was mortalitv at advanced stages of the disease. On an examination of live as well as freshly dead specimens, the liver of the affected fish was found to be damaged due to fatty infiltration of hepatic cells. However, externally the fish appeared normal. Fish fed with poor quality feed with rancid fat developed the disease which could be successfully controlled by withdrawing the rancid feed and providing fresh feed with high protein (about 22%) content.
