Abstract

The problem investigated in this paper mainly deals with the fatigue behaviour of L-section stiffener to crossbeam joints in orthotropic steel bridge decks. Static and fatigue tests were carried out on two panels composed of one deck plate, five L-section longitudinal stiffeners and two crossbeams. Eleven cracks were observed at the circular arc edges of cut-outs in the crossbeams, except for two cracks at the weld toes in the stiffener to deck plate joint. Stress state at two sides of cut-outs is duscussed. The calculated stresses from a finite element analysis agree well with these measured from the static test. The maximum principal stress ranges along circular arc edges are important factors influencing the fatigue behaviour of cut-outs. The S-N curve for their fatigue design is proposed using a regression analysis.
