Abstract

Fatigue and static tests on a truck frame built by Breda of Pistoia (Italy) for the railways of Washington, DC (USA) are described; the tests were carried out at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Pisa. In order to obtain fully reliable tests, a rig was planned and manufactured to restrain the truck frame in a way mechanically equivalent to the real situation and to apply the proof loads correctly; 20 hydraulic jacks were built specifically for these tests.
