Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate how fathers of young infants view fatherhood. Twenty-six fathers from normal, intact families were interviewed when their infants were 3 months of age. Their spontaneous answers to open-ended questions were scored on ten 6-point rating scales. Fathers' willingness to assume infant care responsibilities was related to their sex-role concepts and the amount of time fathers were available. Fathers who felt that fathers should serve a greater number of functions with their children were more likely to have been present in the delivery room at the infant's birth.
