Abstract
Discusses three Australian novels--The Man Who Loved Children (1940) by Christina Stead, Time Enough Later (1945) by Kylie Tennant and The Watch Tower (1966) by Elizabeth Harrower--which âare strikingly similar in that they have at their heart a male figure who acts in a distructive way towards the women around him; all three of the male protagonists disguise their egotistic aggression under forms of pretended love ⦠and in all three the victim of the deception eventually sees through it and abandons the older manâ (459).
