Abstract

Equilibration of acid sulfate soils and soils with low sulfate content, previously reduced by 30 days flooding, with parathion, methyl parathion, and fenitrothion led to the formation of aminoparathion, aminomethylparathion, and aminofenitrothion, respectively, as the major products; virtually no degradation of these insecticides occurred in aerobic soils. In addition, desethyl aminoparathion, desmethyl aminomethylparathion, and desmethyl aminofenitrothion were detected in anaerobic acid sulfate soils equilibrated with parathion, methyl parathion, and fenitrothion, respectively. Dealkylation occurred also in anaerobic low sulfate soils, but only when supplemented with extraneous sulfate or its end product, hydrogen sulfide.
