Abstract

Over 27 million Americans travel abroad every year. By 1990, tourism is projected to be the United States’ largest industry employing 7 million people and grossing a trillion dollars in revenue [1]. The morbidity experience of American travelers as well as European travelers is documented in the medical literature [2–6]. Health advice to travelers has been receiving increased attention in recent years [7–14]. American physicians should know the mortality risks as well as the morbidity risks to their patients who plan to travel overseas.
