Abstract

The present report is the largest retrospective review of fatal shark attacks in Australia, consisting of eight cases from Queensland over a 20-year period. Whole body PMCT was utilised in four cases, two of which revealed shark teeth and two that incorporated angiography for wound interrogation. Shark teeth were recovered from wounds in three cases and from a surfboard in one case. Shark experts were consulted in five cases and provided speciation using morphometrics and DNA recovered from either teeth or clothing.
