Abstract

Rupture of the left ventricular (LV) free wall is a common complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Rupture of either the ventricular septum (VS) or a LV papillary muscle during AMI is far less common. 1,2 Combined rupture of LV free wall and either VS or papillary muscle is rare and this possibility has received little attention. 3–5 In this report we describe certain clinical and necropsy findings in 7 patients who had combined rupture of both LV free wall and VS during AMI; in all of them the rupture was also associated with hemopericardium.
