Abstract

Thyrotoxicosis hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterized by periodic episodes of paralysis and weakness. The condition is caused by a defect in the Na+/K+ ATPase pump causing an intracellular buildup of potassium and serum hypokalemia. This induces a paralysis of the musculature from a decreased membrane electrical potential. The condition is most commonly seen in Asian populations with a marked male predominance. It is characterized by periodic episodes of paralysis and weakness. The authors present a rare case of a fatal cardiac arrhythmia secondary to the disease.
