Abstract

Summary A fat ray tomography with optimal relaxation factor is presented. The relaxation factor controls the amount of solution updates in SIRT iterative tomographic inversion process. We derive a formula to automatically calculate the optimal relaxation factor at each iteration step of tomographic inversion, hence to increase the convergence speed and thus improve the efficiency of the fat ray tomography. In addition, we propose an equivalent source method for calculation of traveltime in advancing wavefront algorithm, which can improve the accuracy of calculated traveltimes. Our tomography method yielded good result in estimating the near surface velocity field and the static correction of field seismic data from a mountainous region of northwestern China.
