Abstract

With much fanfare and hoopla, Lone Star Industries has been introducing a new cement the company claims will revolutionize the concrete and construction industries. Pyrament cement, says the Greenwich, Conn.-based firm, cures in just four hours, is much stronger than conventional cement, and can be poured in cold weather. Lone Star—the largest cement producer in the U.S.—is sparing no expense to make sure architects, engineers, and builders get the message about its new product. At the recent annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C., the company demonstrated Pyrament while treating 1100 professionals to drinks and lunch. Similar lavish bashes have been held in New York, Chicago, and Houston. The company has bought full-page ads in major newspapers.
