Abstract

AC conductivity measurements demonstrate fast proton conduction in three ion-exchange materials; Sb 2O 5 · nH 2O, ZrO 2 · nH 2O and SnO 2 · nH 2O. Structural characterization showed the first to have a pyrochlore framework, the other two to be composed of charged crystalline particles held together by an aqueous region containing OH - ions in ZrO 2 · nH 2O and H 3O + ions in SnO 2 · nH 2O. Interpretations of the ion-exchange properties, densification under cold pressing, and protonic conduction are shown to have general application to other ion-exchange materials.
