Abstract

Locoregionally recurrent and metastatic melanomas involving the head and neck are associated with a very poor prognosis and significant negative quality of life effects due to their anatomic location. Treatment options are limited with poor response rates. Most patients have failed prior treatment including surgery, systemic therapy, and conventional radiation. Fast neutron radiotherapy provides a radiobiologic advantage in a number of relatively radioresistant tumors, especially in the setting of gross disease.
