Abstract

Fast-neutron irradiation of pure iron foils has been used to produce 54Mn in iron for nuclear orientation thermometry instead of the commonly used diffusion technique. Compared with a 60CoCo nuclear orientation thermometer good agreement was found. No deviations occurred if an externally magnetizing field of 0.2 T or larger was used.
