Abstract

Frame rate up conversion (FRUC) can be used to enhance the visual quality by increasing the frame rate without extra data. In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient FRUC algorithm for H.264 coded image sequences. The candidate motion vectors of an interpolated frame are chosen from the collocated and spatially adjacent blocks. Accuracy of each motion vector is verified by the similarity of the corresponding blocks on the trajectory. Multiple frames are employed to substantiate the coherence of the motion trajectory. Unlike conventional FRUC methods, this implementation requires no motion estimation. Compared with other FRUC algorithms in the literature, the proposed method provides better visual quality with reduced computational complexity.
