Abstract

The ultrafast pump-and-probe technique was applied to study the electron-hole plasma (EHP) expansion in a thin platelet CdSe. Under the high-density surface excitation, the band absorption initially pushes out to low energy until 15 ps together with the decrease in the exciton absorption. The result is explained by assuming the constant-velocity EHP expansion to the depth of the sample. The expansion velocity of the boundary between the EHP phase and the exciton phase is 1.9×10 7 cm/s, which is much faster than the velocity of sound.
