Abstract

The positive-ion fast-atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra of the biniclear [CNRu(L2)CNRu(L'2)CN]+ and trinuclear [CNRu(L2)CNRu(L2CNRu(L2)CN]2+ complexes (L=2,2′-bipyridine; L' = 2,2′-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline) have been investigated and compared with those of the mononuclear NCRu(L'2CN species. The FAB fragmentation patterns of the mononuclear species are interpreted by a combination of simple losses of neutral polypyridine ligands andHCN molecules and provide useful information for the understanding of the gas-phase decomposition of the oligimeric species.
