Abstract

Eddy currents in the superconducting magnet system of the Wendelstein 7X stellarator during an emergency turn-off is investigated in this paper. The Wendelstein 7-X stellarator is a steady-state fusion experiment being built at the Greifswald Branch Institute of the Max-Planck-Institut fur Plasmaphysik (IPP). Due to the nonplanar construction of the magnet system computations of the eddy currents by means of the finite element method (FEM) are difficult due to the large number of unknowns and the complicated mesh. Since it is a slowly varying transient process an indirect finite element method is applied. In that method an integral approach is used to calculate a magnetic field distribution. Next, for the given magnetic field, eddy currents are calculated. The indirect method gives only the approximate solution but the algorithm is much faster than for the direct FEM. The description of the magnet system, the principles of the applied method and example results are presented.
