Abstract

We develop a fast-acquisition simplified joint maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation algorithm of the bit synchronization epoch and data bit values for a short-burst direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) transmission, in a white Gaussian noise environment. With respect to the optimal algorithm, the simplified procedure reduces the computational cost by more than one order of magnitude at no accuracy expense for carrier-to-noise ratios (CNRs) above 35 dB/spl middot/Hz.
