Abstract

The author describes and explains important changes in the field of historical studies during the last decades, using research on the First World War as an example. He discusses the major factors driving such changes and recognizes some potentially productive effects of fashion. He proves that the search for truth and the dependence on changing viewpoints are compatible and that they define history as a scholarly discipline within its cultural context.
