Rouan, D. ; Lena, P. J. ; Puget, J. L. ; de Boer, K. S. ; Wijnbergen, J. J. Abstract The French Airborne Infrared Telescope was used for far-IR (72 to 94 microns and 114 to 196 microns) observations of Saturn (as a calibration source), a dark cloud near the H II region S140, and the galactic plane. Far-IR emission was detected from a region situated in the dark molecular cloud L1204, a few arcmin NE of S140, and is shown to be associated with that cloud. A dust temperature of about 35 K is deduced, the total IR intensity is computed, and a mass of 600 solar masses is estimated for the observed area. Observation of diffuse far-IR emission from the galactic plane at 28 deg latitude is reported. A dust temperature of 22 K is deduced, and a calculation of the IR luminosity per hydrogen atom is performed which indicates that the Galaxy has a total IR luminosity of the order of or greater than its optical luminosity. The detection of a previously unknown IR source close to the galactic plane is also noted.
