Abstract

AbstractThe cross‐section for far‐infrared absorption of small metal particles are calculated in the dipole approximation. Considerable deviations are found from the corresponding classical results at small particle size a/l0⪅1 (a is the radius of the particle, l0 the mean free path of an electron in bulk metal). The results obtained give a possible explanation to the size dependence of the absorption coefficient of small metal particles observed in recent experiments.
