Abstract

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh,3941 O’Hara Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15260, USA(Dated: July 15, 2009)A primordial magnetic eld in the early universe will cause Faraday rotation of the linear po-larization of the cosmic microwave background generated via Compton scattering at the surface oflast scattering. This rotation induces a non-zero parity-odd (B-mode) polarization component. TheWilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 5-year data puts an upper limit on the magni-tude of the B-polarization power spectrum; assuming that the B-polarization signal is totally due tothe Faraday rotation e ect, the upper limits on the comoving amplitude of a primordial stochasticmagnetic eld range from 6 10
