Abstract

The energy- temperature- and field dependence of the Faraday rotation of metamagnetic EuSe and antiferromagnetic EuTe has been determined on thin films. Upon magnetic order we state a doubling of the rotation maxima on both substances in the energy range of the 4ƒ 7−4ƒ 6d dt 2 g transition. While the temperature dependence. of all peaks of the Faraday rotation of EuSe follows the net magnetization the temperature dependence of the EuTe peaks either resembles antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic magnetization curves. For EuTe the results indicate the existence of a superlattice band splitting at the boundary of the magnetic Brillouin zone.
