Abstract

LPE films of bismuth substituted GdIG have been made with a high Faraday rotation and a compensation temperature near room temperature making them attractive for magneto optic recording. In films of composition Y1.6−xLu1.4BixFe5O12 an unusual high Bi concentration (molar fraction x=0.7) and high Faraday rotation (6.7δ/μm at 515 nm) have been realised. From Faraday‐ and Kerr‐effect spectra in the U.V. the origin of the enhanced rotation is attributed to a charge transfer transition at about 370 nm.
