G. ; Ferland, G. J. Abstract The effects of dust within the broad-line emission region of QSOs by incorporating a realistic grain opacity which decreases with energy in the ionizing continuum are examined. Any changes in the ionization structure therefore reflect the effective hardening of the continuum. The magnitude of structural changes in QSOs is probably small, although some changes might be introduced if there is significant depletion of carbon into small particles. Some effects of dust in explaining anomalies in H II regions are also discussed.
