Abstract

Far infrared spectra of 18-crown-6 (18C6), 15-crown-5 (15C5), benzo15-crown-5 (b15C5), benzo12-crown-4 (b12C4) with acetronitrile (CH 3CN) and nitromethane (CH 3NO 2) in carbon tetrachloride solutions have been studied. For 18C6CH 3CN and 18C6CH 3NO 2 complexes spectra of superior quality than those reported by McKenna and Eyring (Appl. Spectrosc., 40 (1986) 16) have been observed. For b15C5CH 3CN and b15C5CH 3NO 2 complexes new bands have been observed for the first time. The bands near 120 cm −1 and 160 cm −1 were assigned to intermolecular stretching vibration ν σ in the complexes. This assignment was used for model normal mode analysis of the complexes. No bands in the far-infrared spectrra have been observed for the complexes between the crown ethers studied and chloroform, and for the complexes of 15C5 and b12C4 hosts.
