Abstract

High-resolution (0.007 cm −1 spectra of the dimer (HCl) 2 have been obtained in the 15-300 cm −1 region using a 20 m absorption path through HCl at low temperature (≈140 K) and pressure (≈5 Torr). In a preliminary analysis of these results, five relatively prominent perpendicular (Δ K =±1) subbands are rotationally analyzed. Four of these are assigned to the out-of-plane torsional vibration, ν 6, and the fifth to a rotation-tunneling transition. The vibrational origin of ν 6 is 160.72 cm −1, the ground state A rotational parameter is 10.96 cm −1, and the tunneling splitting approximately 14 cm −1. The B and C rotational parameters for the ground (lower tunneling) state agree well with previous mid-infrared work.
