Abstract
Far infrared absorption spectra of calcium, cadmium, and barium fluorides doped with Co 2+, Mn 2+ and Ni 2+ at 1.4 K show several peaks (17–150 cm − 1). A sharp resonant band mode is observed for BaF 2:Mn 2+ at 22.8 cm − 1. The frequency increases to 30 cm − 1 when the temperature is raised to 60 K. This unusual frequency( 1) shift and also the increase in spectral width are explained in terms of scattering processes with Einstein oscillators of one frequency v E = 30 cm − 1. Such resonant band modes are specific to transition elements and have not been found for rare earth-doped alkaline earth halides.( 2)
