Abstract

Infrared absorption ε″/ ν of vitreous silica is calculated from the dielectric dispersion measured at low frequencies. The calculated ε″/ ν shows a peak around 1 THz above 450 K. The peak height increases as the temperature rises. These indicate that the thermally activated relaxation mode turns to an anharmonic vibration mode. The calculated ε″/ ν is compared with the measured one at 11 and 297 K.
