Abstract

Abstract Over the last decade, FAO has served as a strategic partner to NEPAD (the New Partnership for Africa's Development) Planning and Coordination Agency (NPCA) and member countries in providing expertise for the design and implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) which represents a vision for the restoration of agricultural growth, food security and the attainment of the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) in Africa. CAADP is a strategic framework fully owned and led by African governments and stakeholders which guide country development efforts and partnerships in the agricultural sector. In a manner similar to the broader NEPAD agenda, it embodies the principles of peer review and dialogue, the adoption of best practices and mutual learning with the objective of raising the quality and consistency of country policies and strategies in the agricultural sector. FAO has been supporting the preparation of CAADP compacts and the formulation of national agricultural investment plans and programmes as well as their implementation. This chapter reviews the progress achieved in advancing the CAADP agenda in 2010-2013, and also examines current efforts to effectively link emergency responses to the current food security crises in the Horn of Africa and the Sahel to longer term investment plans and programmes that contribute to reducing structural vulnerabilities and improving resilience.
