Abstract
We show that it is relatively simple to design a fan-out grating with a continuous profile which has a theoretical performance equal to that of a binary profile but takes considerably less time to optimise. We demonstrate that it is feasible to produce gratings with a continuous and arbitary groove profile although present results are not as good as for some binary gratings.
