Abstract

Senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT) is a disease which affects family members almost as much as the individual patient. For this reason, effective treatment must be directed to the whole family. Family systems theory, as described here, is a model which provides an explanation of the impact of the disease on the family as well as a framework for intervention. This approach requires a somewhat unique set of interventions on the part of the health care professional, recognizing the family as the unit for treatment, rather than the diagnosed patient. The family systems model and its application to SDAT are described.
