Abstract

A middle-range theory is presented that describes the potential impact of divorce on children. Concepts from family stress theory are integrated with research findings from the divorce literature to accomplish this goal. The proposed theoretical model is concerned especially with variations in the definition of the situation assigned to the crisis of divorce by children and custodial parents. Substantial attention is devoted to relationships that children from divorcing families experience with custodial and noncustodial parents. The model also emphasizes that family stress theory must accommodate both individual and relationship variables to adequately explain the complex influences of divorce on children.
