Abstract

A survey of rural Turkish teenagers--mostly from families of 5 or 6 children--indicates that they want no more than 2 or 3 children themselves. The men want an average of 3 children compared to 2 children desired by the young women; the difference is due largely to a preference by the men for a greater number of sons. Most of the youths displayed an awareness of the disadvantages of a family of 5 children or more and the advantages of a 2 child family. (summary in FRE)
