They are important as they enable people to communicate, and they help people maintaining blood ties and distinguishing between clans/groups. Chinese surnames have a long, rich history. Each surname has a meaningful origin and an interesting story behind it. This chapter explores the origins of Chinese surnames and their evolution and distinctive characteristics. The content of this chapter is based on existing Chinese genealogies, and it reveals how Chinese surnames with rich connotations are an integral component of China’s profound history and culture.
