Abstract

Even if family life education (FLE) is not an established reality in Brazil, many initiatives that meet FLE goals and strategies can be described in the areas of social work and health. This chapter analyzes some of these initiatives in the Brazilian historical, social, and economic contexts, stressing what has been implemented through public policies and services. Efforts are made to characterize social action and programs at the level of civil society as well. The initiatives described here, in terms of public policies, such as the program for integral assistance to the family (PAIF) and the family health program (PSF) and initiatives of civil society (school for parents), are still limited in their reach and impact, considering the Brazilian population as a whole; they do not respond to the real needs of families in a broad, meaningful way. Still, they already form a relevant set of knowledges and experiences and contribute to our taking the family seriously into account and promoting effective family life education.
